We were asked to design the interior of a new co-working space in Ghent, Belgium. The space needed to provide for some 20 co-workers. Located at an old harbour the interior opens up to beautiful views and ever-changing skies.
We designed the space as a series of areas, divided by half-open structures. These aesthetically simple structures limit the size of the working spaces, whilst maintaining the views to the outside and the light coming in. They bring rhythm and verticality in to the space. Within the dividing structures acoustic absorption material and electricity are integrated.
The open kitchen with a large table is the main meeting area. The co-workers join each other for lunch and cook together once in a while. The kitchen is tiled with a small matte tile and has cabinets with the rich drawing of birch plywood. Next to the kitchen a large table - oiled in deep blue with brass inlay - offers places for two, five or twenty people. At the back of the space there is a meeting room and a lounge space.
The whole project, except for the tables and chairs, was built by us together with the client. We developed a simple building method and clear steps. The space already started to be 'theirs' during the construction.
